For Wild Animals, the #BirdFlu Disaster Is Already Here
Since a new H5N1 emerged in 2020, scientists have become concerned virus might set off next #pandemic. But for wild #birds, prospect of a deadly, uncontained outbreak is not theoretical. It has decimated avian populations around the globe, with body counts that can sometimes be staggering: an estimated 24,000 Cape #cormorants killed in South Africa, more than 57,000 #pelicans dead in Peru.

Tree Climber: Woodpecker

I love the way woodpeckers seem to defy gravity when walking up the undersides of trees. This is a male, red-bellied woodpecker and if look closely at his lower abdomen you can see where these woodpeckers get their name. Why are they called red -bellied instead of red-headed, well because red-head is already taken. There is a north American woodpecker species whose entire head is red.

It just came back but the flicker chirped at it till it flew away again. I think the flicker has never seen a pileated woodpecker before either but imagines something that big will eat all the food.
It's so beautiful! I love it! #birds

Tidal Trek

I took this photo last year at Gulfport, Mississippi. It is of a willet (Tringa semipalmata) wading through the shallow surf on the beach.
